French Institute of Indology
The prestigious institute of ideologies was established in the mid 1950’s. It was established by an eminent French Indologist Dr. Jean Fillozet. This highly professional body is committed towards the study of Indian cultural heritage for over fifty years. It was originally set up for the study of local language and culture. The institute now has links with many French Universities and organizations.
It has over 60,000 books, 800 periodicals, 8,500 palm manuscripts and 1, 35,000 photographs of temples and edifices of South India. Besides indological studies this institute is engaged in research related to Ecology, Cartography, Palynology and Pedology.
Ecole Francais Dei’ Extreme Orient was established in the 19th century. This is a renowned institute in the world for its research in archaeology, history and sociology. Alliance Francaise conducts courses in French Language and aims to preserve the French tradition in Pondicherry. Various cultural events are also held here. JIPMER located at the sub-urbs of Pondicherry is rated among the six important medical institutions in the country. The artistically designed JIPMER complex sprawls amidst scenic surroundings. The campus comprises of a huge teaching hospital, students’ and nurses’ hostels, residential quarters for the staff and playground.
